With your leaky valve covers leaking oil right onto the exhaust manifolds.

That’s actually not bad for a W body fire.

How much was it leaking? It’s not an uncommon issue for vlve covers to leak onto the manifolds on many older longitudinal mounted V6 and V8 engines without spontaneous combustion....

Yay, oil fires!

My Audi did that all the time. No fires doe

That’s what I was wondering. It’s fairly common when you’ve got a leaky valve cover gasket but there has to be a lot of oil going into the engine bay for it to do anything other than just turn to smoke off the manifold.

I think the recall lists it as an oil leak that fills the spark plug loom. Whole thing can go up.

It threw a tantrum after wearing the donut for too long. Unfortunately, things got out of hand.

This happened to my old 01 grand prix. It burnt my parents garage down as well as fucking the upstairs up with smoke damage.
EDIT: this car actually doesn't look to bad compared to what my car looked like.

This had to be a particularly serious build up of oil, if a just leaky valve cover gasket caused fires there wouldn’t be a single Land Rover on the road older than ten years...

My Legacy had the same problem, nothing like pulling into work and thinking your car is on fire.

Used to happen on my mx5 so in line 4 too.

You’d think they would’ve learned something from the Fiero fiasco...

Are you sure it wasn’t a fuel leak? Because the GTO’s have problems with burning to the ground occasionall. There is a fuel line that feeds the driver’s side fuel rail. It gets chafed by the beautiful plastic vanity covers they put over the valve covers/coils. The cover was trimmed enough at the rear to clear the fuel line and it literally just cuts the fuel line open. It dumps pressurized fuel directly onto the driver’s side header and . . .
Replaced mine with a braided line from Russel. After only 50k or so it already had a very well defined cut in the fuel line.

That is awesome. We have that issue on older Detroit engines at my work. The engine harness will wick up oil from a pressure sensor and will foul the entire engine harness. At that point it is better to just burn the truck down.

owned 4 landies and they have all leaked marked there territory, i dont think ive seen/worked on one without being covered in oil.

My brother’s ’98 Regal GS very nearly ended up looking like the above pic.
It was at a shop, and they were juggling cars around the crowded lot. The engine was left running while the car was parked on the side for a few minutes, and the next thing anybody knew, smoke was pouring out from under the hood. They put it out quickly and called my brother to give him the bad news.
Fortunately, only a few items were seriously damaged. The plastic engine cover, half of the plug wires, and a little plastic cylinder-thing (which we later found to be the boost controller). They gave my brother some spare wires they had lying around, and he drove the car to my place, where I replaced the valve cover gaskets.
As I removed the old gaskets, it became clear that the bolts were not only insufficiently torqued; they were unevenly torqued.

This a Grand Prix, not a GTO. 3800 Series II with valve cover oil leaking issues. There’s actually a recall on it right now because it is known to cause oil fires.

It leaks directly onto the manifold and puddles there. The Champagne Shitbox has yet to catch on fire from all the oil that was leaked onto its exhaust, though, so I am confus. This is a known issue with a recall out on it, though, so GM might be buying this person a new car.

I’d say that’s a problem and hopefully GM does.

Oops, I see the rear door now.
I actually don’t know if GM ever released a recall for the fuel line issue on mine. Oh well. It’s fixed

80's Escorts had this same problem. Ford spent enough on lawyers to prove it wasn’t a common enough problem to force a recall.

never heard of that problem with Monaro / GTOs before , and i work at a Holden dealer here in Oz.

Maybe they cut your plastic covers differently. Common issue with the GTO’s here in the states. That and the BCM harness rubbing on a bit of firewall frame and cutting into it and shorting out.
